Welcome
Potato Hill Farm Outdoor Education Center is dedicated to establishing awareness, understanding and appreciation of the environment, the responsibilities associated with preserving the environment and providing an opportunity to increase the physical health of visiting students by engaging them in various outdoor activities.
Potato Hill Farm Outdoor Education Center (PHFOEC) consists of 168 acres of maintained interior trails, open fields, and a beautiful Adirondack style gazebo overlooking the picturesque Adirondack Mountains and the Tug Hill Plateau in Boonville, New York. PHFOEC works in partnership with Black River Environmental Improvement Association (BREIA) with use of its adjacent extensive Trail System. Check out each of our campuses below.
Our Campuses
Our long range goal is to offer students a new educationally layered experience each time they return to PHFOEC. We have a total of seven campuses, each with unique, seasonal activities.
The story of the geological history of the Adirondack Mountains and its accompanying foothills is distinctive when compared with other mountain systems. Both the Rockies and the Appalachians for example have an elongated shape while the mountains making up the Adirondacks form a circular dome. While in geological terms this dome is relatively young (emerging some five million years ago), it is made up of rocks more than 1000 million years old. Consequently, the Adirondacks have been described as “new mountains from old rocks”.
The landscapes of the Adirondack Foothills which make up the seven PHFOEC campuses listed below are a consequence of a glacier that began to develop some 25 million years ago. The resulting landforms we enjoy with our students are a living laboratory for the geological history, flora and fauna that comprise our “classrooms” at PHFOEC.
